Recruiting the next generation for insurance

GIIA Grainy

The challenge

Insurance plays a major role in Guernsey. It helps manage global risks, supports the island’s economy and offers young people real career opportunities. The problem? Most students didn’t know that.

To many sixth-formers, insurance didn’t feel visible, exciting or relevant to their future. Guernsey International Insurance Association (GIIA) wanted to change that by raising the profile of the industry and attracting new talent from a younger audience. But another careers talk was never going to cut through. The challenge was to make insurance feel real, useful and worth considering.

How we made it matter

The Orchard met students where they were. Young people don’t want a sector sold to them. They want to know where they fit, what the work feels like and whether it has a future they can see themselves in. So we helped GIIA turn insurance from an abstract career option into a live, hands-on experience.

Insuring the Future gave sixth-form students direct access to local firms, facilitators and real career conversations, while showing Guernsey’s role in managing global risks. Less careers talk. More step inside and see for yourself. The Orchard shaped the event from the ground up, creating the brand identity, social presence, content, merchandise, student goody bags, media activity, interview coordination and pre and post-event press releases.

As the event grew, so did the storytelling. In 2024, we produced polished video content to capture the energy of the room, with shorter edits created for social. By 2025, demand from schools had pushed the event into a bigger venue at St James, giving GIIA space for more students, more firms and a bigger conversation about the future of insurance in Guernsey.

  • 150students across three events
  • 9local firms sponsored the events
  • 13.4kunique accounts reached
  • 109.7kviews on the event's Instagram in 2025

The impact

  • Annual event delivered for the last three years

  • Students came from all five post-16 institutions

  • 30+ facilitators volunteered to support the workshops

  • 98% of Instagram views came from non-followers

  • Positive feedback from teachers and students

  • Students said they were now open to a career in insurance after not being aware of it beforehand

The takeaway

This is Culture Smart storytelling with a future focus. The Orchard helped GIIA move beyond explaining insurance and made the industry something students could experience, question and picture themselves being part of.

By turning a recruitment challenge into an engaging, student-focused event, Insuring the Future helped shift perception, build awareness and open up a new conversation about careers in one of Guernsey’s key sectors.

Not another corporate careers talk but a real look at where insurance could take them.

“Orchard’s support has made our ‘Insuring the Future’ events a huge success. They took care of everything, from working with our sponsors to creating an engaging experience for the students. Thanks to their efforts, we’ve had lots of feedback from teachers and students alike, with many students now interested in a career in Guernsey’s insurance sector. We’re excited to see how we can grow this event in the future.”

Adele Gale, GIIA.

Following the success of the first ‘Insuring the Future’ workshop in 2023 and by popular demand of the schools, we repeated the event in 2024 and a bigger event for 2025.
